Why students are not doing well for Secondary School English?
I believe that the main reason why your child is facing these difficulties is because… Unlike Math and Science where there is the “right” answer, with English, there is no correct answer.
Yet, this has not discouraged teachers from using a ‘feels right or sounds right’ approach instead of using scientific methods of teaching.

Scientific Teaching Method #1
Increasing Reading Skills and Critical
Thinking with CRITICA
Summary: Increase reading & critical thinking with commercial advertisements
Students often complain to their English teachers that they have no idea how to read between the lines to tackle comprehension questions which are ‘Inferential’ and ‘Language Use’ in nature
Worse still, some have absolutely no idea what they are reading at all! Why would this matter to your child?
Currently, ‘Inferential’ and ‘Language Use’ questions typically make up to 25% of the whole paper. This figure is now set to increase to 40% with the introduction of the new syllabus where students are expected to understand the author’s choice of language at the word, phrase and sentence levels!
With visual texts now being included as a key defining feature of the new EL syllabus, students’ reading and thinking skills are further put to the test.
In response to this, I led a team of fellow teachers and pioneered an innovative teaching package: CRITICA (Comprehension Reading Improvement Through Inferring Commercial Advertisements).
CRITICA uses commercial advertisements as a rich visual stimulus and incorporates the Observe-Wonder-Infer (OWI) Thinking Strategy to engage students in the critical analysis of visual text to increase their reading skills.
Based on feedback on my research, students who were taught using CRITICA and OWI Thinking strategy reported greater learning motivation and a much higher increase in their critical thinking skills!
The very fact that my team’s research paper was published on the MOE EduMall site further supports the immense value and practicality of our project on relevant and innovative teaching practices that enhances student learning outcomes in English.

Collaborative Writing
Summary: Improving Writing and Grammar with the Collaborative Writing Model (students writing an essay together)
As you know, writing assignments are generally a student’s WORST nightmare … and teachers struggle with encouraging their students to write.
But do you know the REAL reason why your child dislikes writing is not because he/she is lazy? Actually, the reason may be attributed to the fact that they are FEARFUL.
Yes, that’s right. As much as they hate to admit it,
they are simply AFRAID of writing!

- Is your child clueless on how to brainstorm for writing ideas?
- Plan their writing?
- Or how to write clearly to be understood by their readers?
Then collaborative writing is meant for your child!
How does our Scientific English Teaching Methodology remove the fear out of writing AND help your child see the greatest improvement?
Pouring through multiple educational journals, both local and international, to search for a way that could help students improve the way they write, I finally found the answer: Collaborative Writing!
By incorporating Collaborative Writing into our Scientific Teaching Methodology where students get together to write an assignment… or simply, TWO heads are better than one!
This has been supported by research where it has shown that collaborative writing ( students writing an essay together):
- Enhances student interaction in the classroom, allowing your child to enjoy his lessons more.
- Allows your child to absorb and learn better because they have fun on their writing assignments.
- Increases student’s self-confidence in the language. Self confidence is importance because it creates a ‘self-fulling prophecy’ where the more likely the student thinks he or she is going to do well,the more likely he or she will!
- Lowers the anxiety associated with completing writing tasks.
BUT WAIT, there’s MORE. Students will write BETTER because they pick up the following important language writing skills:
- Enhanced ideas for writing content
- Heightened awareness in the organisation of ideas
- Greater grammatical accuracy
- Richer vocabulary

Summary: Checking for Students’ Understanding using
Assessment for Learning (AfL)
Assessment for Learning (AfL)
Here’s a question for you: Do you know what separates an ‘exceptional’ teacher from the ‘average’ teacher?
Answer #1:
The ‘average’ teacher merely teaches the lesson whereas the ‘exceptional’ teacher not only teaches, but more importantly, ensures that their students have LEARNT and UNDERSTOOD the lesson.
Answer #2:
The exceptional teacher constantly employs a range of effective tools and strategies to assess for their students’ understanding and hence, the term ‘Assessment for Learning (AfL)’.
Some background information on AfL: The current worldwide interest in AfL is, to a large extent, due to a review of educational research carried out by Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam at Kings College in London (UK).
Their authoritative publication ‘Inside the Black Box’ was a review that drew upon 250 research journals and publications between 1988 and 1997.
Where AfL is implemented effectively:
- Teachers understand WHAT and HOW their learners are thinking
- Students receive better quality FEEDBACK and SUPPORT
- Students know WHERE they are currently at in relation to their learning GOALS and what are the NEXT STEPS they could take to bridge this gap
- OUTCOME: GREATER ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

Scan
Stage One l Scan l Your child will first begin with a ‘Diagnostic’ Session where an EduEdge Tutor will diagnose the student’s learning style and figure out the appropriate learning needs for the child.
